Will I need to be hospitalized overnight for my Stem Cell Treatment?

This is not a hospital admission for illness: it is a planned overnight stay so our nursing and medical team can closely monitor your response to the treatment, manage any temporary effects such as fever or soreness, and confirm that you are ready to travel before discharge. You stay at Russald Medical, our clinic in the medical tower of Torres Plaza Agua Caliente in Tijuana, in a room adapted for post-procedure care. The overnight stay is included in your written plan. Some minor procedures, such as a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) session on its own, are done as outpatient visits, and the doctor tells you in advance if your plan is different. The cells used are allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord.

What happens during the night

• Comfort measures, such as paracetamol (acetaminophen), fluids and positioning, are provided as needed.
• Medications are taken on schedule, which is especially important for Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, diabetes and heart conditions.

A typical schedule

Based on the travel information our team sends to patients:

• Arrival day: pickup in the San Diego airport area, blood tests, medical forms and your in-person consultation with the doctor; depending on your plan, the application takes place that day or the next morning, with a night at a nearby hotel in between.
• Treatment day: the application in the morning, followed by the overnight stay at the clinic.
• Discharge day: check-up with the doctor, written instructions, a medical report and return to the San Diego airport area.

After discharge

Before you leave, the doctor reviews your vital signs, the treated area and how you feel, and gives you written instructions for activity, medications and warning signs. Most patients fly home the same day. At home, mild effects such as soreness or tiredness usually fade within a few days, and our team stays in contact through follow-up calls and messages.

What the evidence shows about safety

• A 2026 meta-analysis of IV umbilical-cord-derived MSCs in Stem Cells Translational Medicine found temporary fever as the most consistent side effect, without an increase in serious infection, thrombosis, cancer or death in controlled trials.
• A 2020 systematic review in EClinicalMedicine of randomized trials of IV MSCs found that they increased the risk of temporary fever but not of infusion toxicity, infection, thrombosis, malignancy or death.
• In randomized trials of MSC injections for knee osteoarthritis, summarized in a 2024 meta-analysis in the Journal of Orthopaedic Translation, serious adverse events were similar to control treatments.
