Candidacy
Is stem cell therapy right for your hip?
Candidacy is confirmed by our specialist after reviewing your imaging and medical history. These are the profiles that tend to be a good fit.
You may be a good candidate if
- You have had hip pain for three months or longer and it limits your daily activity
- You have mild to moderate cartilage wear, osteoarthritis or tendon damage confirmed by imaging
- Physical therapy, medication or injections have not given you lasting relief
- You want to explore a non-surgical option before, or instead of, hip replacement
- You are in stable general health and can travel to Tijuana for 2 to 3 days
We may recommend another path if
- The hip has severe structural damage or deformity better treated with surgery
- You have an active infection or an active cancer
- A medical condition is not yet under control
- You expect a guaranteed result
Not everyone is a candidate. If our specialist believes the risks outweigh the expected benefit, we will tell you before you book anything.

How hip treatment is performed
How the treatment works
Two biologic therapies, one targeted injection
Your specialist injects a combination of donor stem cells and your own platelet-rich plasma directly into the hip. The goal is to calm chronic inflammation and support the tissue environment the hip needs to function.
Component 1
Mesenchymal stem cells
Allogeneic (donor) mesenchymal stem cells, screened and cryopreserved to preserve viability. They are studied for their role in modulating inflammation and supporting tissue repair.
Component 2
Platelet-rich plasma
Drawn from your own blood the same day and concentrated. Platelets carry growth factors that support the healing response around the injected cells.
Delivery
Ultrasound-guided application
Administered by a pain medicine specialist using real-time ultrasound guidance to visualize the target area and support precise placement. Most patients are treated in a single session with local anesthesia and return to their room the same day.

highly recommend. 1st trip in November 2024 for my right hip to avoid hip surgery. did an mri to find i should do my lower back, i didn’t but when i returned to the states and showed the mri to my doctor he said yes, go back, Speing of 2025 i went back and did both my right hip and my lower back, by september of 2025 i was able to do far more walking. 2026 end of April i did the lower back, hip, and a IV drip of stem cells. We ate just finishing a trip to Rome and Sicily where sometimes we walked 5 miles on uneven cobblestones for sightseeing. It has been transformative for me and my mobility. NOTE: I do exercises every morning to stretch my lower back and groin as those are my problem areas. However, i am basically pain free with just the issue of managing flexibility and strength. Please follow pre and post directions to get the entire benefit. I will be going back in the summer of 2027 to continue my progress. needless to say, no hip surgery. thank you!

I had a stem cell procedure here on June 3rd to help me with chronic pain I’ve been dealing for years. The care I’ve received from everyone, especially Dr Cesar Amescua, was wonderful. Their knowledge of steam cells and how to treat pain has made this visit a success. The care after my procedure has made this visit a blessing. My patient coordinator, Osvania and Beth explained treatments clearly making me feel very comfortable about the process. They were attentive to my needs and were very supportive. I highly recommend this clinic and its staff. You will be well taken care of.

Professional and caring team; my hopes were exceeded by the level of service provided. I received stem cells in both knees this week. Dr. Amescua was clearly experienced and skilled as well as relating and kind. The case managers, drivers, and nurses all seemed happy in their jobs and genuinely intent on providing good care. It is too soon to tell whether my knees will improve but I feel confident that this team gave me the best chance possible.

I had an outstanding experience with the entire medical team from start to finish. The doctors were extremely professional, knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely cared about my recovery and comfort. They took the time to explain every step of the process clearly and made me feel confident that I was in the right hands. The medical staff and personnel were equally amazing — kind, respectful, organized, and always ready to help with anything needed. Their level of care and attention truly exceeded my expectations. I also want to specifically thank the drivers and transportation staff. They were always punctual, professional, friendly, and made every trip comfortable and stress-free. Overall, this was one of the best medical experiences I’ve had. I highly recommend this team to anyone looking for professional care, excellent service, and people who truly treat patients with respect and compassion.

I have had an excellent experience. They really have a exceptional team, all the way around! The drivers were great and transported me and my companion from San Diego to the clinic in Tijuana and back to to the San Diego airport. They have our safety at heart. And of you're wondering... it is business as usual in Tijuana. Dr. Amescua is the best!

My experience was absolutely amazing, I came in for stem cells on my lower back, neck, hip, knees ankle, and wrist. Since the moment I contacted the clinic everyone was super helpful and kind. They walk you thru the entire process. They picked me up in San Diego and drove me straight to the clinic. Super easy to do. I am great full I came here and found this place....... I'm back in Tijuana two months later, I had such great results that I brought my wife to get her knees and shoulders done. My range of motion, agility, strength, and overall well being has increased drastically. I'm so estatic to be pain free and living a normal life. Once again my experience from the transportation at San Diego airport to TJ and back was effortless. No issues crossing nor time wasted. The Entire staff is so kind . I would recommend anyone having issues to visit this place it a life changer. I have tried many options in the states and nothing helped.

We just completed Stem Cell Therapy here at StemcellMexico in Tijuana. From Hotel to Clinic transfer through pre testing and bloodwork the care and compassion of every person we had contact with was awesome and remarkable Bet was our full time coordinator and she kept both my wife and me aware of all steps and schedules remarkably! We both have very positive thoughts about neck and back treatment results and I will be back for continuing treatments. Terrific experience all around and after many , many , many months of procrastinating on our part, we regret not doing this sooner!!

I came with my husband for stem cells. I did not know what to expect as he had been doing all of the communication. We are both highly impressed , that started from getting picked up at the air port. The drivers have been professional and friendly and helpful with suggestions on places to eat. Our coordinator, Beth, is like your friend you've not seen in years but picked right up when you see her. DR. Amescua was very attentive and stayed with us. The nurses and other staff , they are all very kind. Beautiful and kind people.

I was informed from a friend of mine about stem cell treatment. So I did my homework. This place the people were very professional. No hick ups. Picked up at airport straight to clinic MRI for my neck. Treatment soon followed. Though I am real sore I treated my knees my lower back and my neck. Transportation traveling across border was a breeze. Now all I need is time

I want to mention that I’m both a nurse and a dental hygienist. As you can imagine, I had certain expectations going in. I was seeking stem cell treatment for my 18-year-old daughter, and when it comes to my kids, the healthcare they receive must meet high standards—and I always supervise their care, given my background in healthcare. My first interaction with the clinic was through Vania. She was simply incredible. She’s exactly the kind of person you hope to hear on the other end of the phone when you’re first exploring a clinic—professional, informative, and kind. Throughout the process, she gradually sent us all the necessary information via email and answered all of my questions. What really stood out to me was that when she didn’t know the answer to something, she took the time to consult with the doctor rather than guessing or giving a vague response. That level of honesty and professionalism was something I didn’t see at many of the other clinics I contacted. The next step was a Zoom consultation with the doctor. This was a pivotal moment for me. There was no sales pitch, no persuasive language, no exaggerated claims, and no promotion of the service. Instead, the doctor gave a clear, science-based explanation of what they could offer and how the process would work. Every question was answered in a simple, logical way that even my daughter could understand. Most importantly, at the end of the call, we were told that the clinic could not accept her as a patient until they reviewed her MRI and confirmed that she was a good candidate and had a solid chance for a successful result. Respect. Thankfully, my daughter was approved, and we began preparing for the procedure. We were asked to make a 15% deposit (other clinics required full payment upfront), and we booked our flights to San Diego. Shortly afterward, we received a detailed transportation report: the name and photo of the driver, the type of vehicle (a spacious luxury SUV), and the license plate number. Our driver, Ramón, confirmed with us the day before and again the morning of the pickup. He was kind, professional, and very supportive. He explained the day’s schedule clearly and got us through the medical tourism border lane in just 1–2 minutes. The entire commute from our hotel in San Diego to the clinic in Tijuana took only 30 minutes. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Beth, who had already been in contact with us while we were still at home. She let us know she would be accompanying us throughout the stem cell therapy process. Meeting Beth was a pleasure. She accompanied us from the moment we met to the moment when we went to bed. Beth was a deeply caring person who supported us every step of the way. Her calm, motherly presence brought comfort during difficult times. She paid close attention to every detail and was always there, giving her time and energy without hesitation. Beth was a deeply intelligent and remarkably intuitive woman. Every gesture she made—whether large or subtle—came from a place of genuine care. Her attention to detail was extraordinary; she anticipated needs before they were voiced. Her support made a real difference. The doctor was incredibly knowledgeable and professional. He laid out a clear plan for the procedure, including what would happen before, during, and after. There were no vague promises—just honest, well-informed guidance that was fully backed up by what actually happened. We stayed overnight at the clinic for IV fluids, monitoring, and pain management—this was all included in the overall cost. It’s worth mentioning that this overnight care was something only this clinic offered; other clinics we looked into planned to discharge patients just 15 minutes after the procedure. Everything went incredibly smoothly. Afterward, the clinic’s driver brought us back to our hotel, and I honestly can’t stop thinking about how great the entire experience was—from start to finish.

Understand your hip concerns
Understanding hip pain
Why hip pain becomes chronic
Hip pain often shows up in the groin, outer hip or buttock, and can make walking, sleeping on your side or putting on shoes difficult.
Medication and steroid shots can quiet the symptoms for a while, but many patients find the pain keeps coming back. That is usually when they start looking at regenerative options.
Conditions we commonly evaluate
- Hip osteoarthritis
- Labral wear
- Chronic bursitis
- Gluteal tendon pain
Pain that lingers
Aching that lasts more than three months or returns after every flare-up.
Morning stiffness
The hip needs time to "warm up" before it moves freely.
Swelling or clicking
Visible puffiness, grinding or catching when you move.
Less of your life
Stairs, walks, sleep or sport are harder than they used to be.
Explore the evidence and limitations
Informed decision
Evidence, risks and alternatives
You deserve the full picture before you decide. This is what we share with every patient during the video consult.
What the evidence says
Mesenchymal stem cell therapy for joint conditions, especially knee osteoarthritis, is an active area of clinical research. Published studies report improvements in pain and function for many patients, and long-term data continues to grow.
Response varies with age, degree of joint damage, weight, activity level and general health. That is why imaging and a specialist review come before any recommendation.
Stem cell therapy for hip pain is not an FDA-approved treatment in the United States. In Mexico, it is performed by licensed physicians in accordance with Mexican health regulations.
Possible risks
Hip injections are minimally invasive, and most side effects are mild and temporary. Your specialist reviews the risks that apply to your case before you consent.
This information is educational and does not replace a medical consultation.
- Soreness, swelling or stiffness at the injection siteCommon, temporary
- Temporary increase in hip pain for a few daysCommon, temporary
- Bruising where blood is drawn for PRPOccasional
- Infection at the injection siteRare
- Allergic or immune reactionRare
- Limited or no improvement in symptomsPossible
Your alternatives
Regenerative therapy is one option among several. The right choice depends on how advanced your hip damage is and what you have already tried.
If surgery is the better path for your hip, our specialist will tell you during the consult.
| Option | Best suited for |
|---|---|
| Physical therapy and weight management | Early symptoms, first line for most patients |
| Anti-inflammatory medication | Short-term symptom control |
| Steroid or hyaluronic acid injections | Temporary relief, often repeated |
| PRP injections alone | Mild wear and tendon problems |
| Stem cell and PRP therapy | Mild to moderate damage when conservative care has not held |
| Hip replacement surgery | Advanced damage or deformity |
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Still have a question? A Patient Advisor can answer it on your free evaluation call.
Can stem cell therapy cure my hip pain?
No treatment can promise a cure. Stem cell therapy aims to reduce inflammation and pain and improve how the hip functions. Joint patients report some of the highest satisfaction among our treatments, but results depend on age, joint damage, health history and lifestyle.
How much does stem cell therapy for hips cost?
There is no single price because every plan is different. Cost depends on the number of joints treated and the protocol. You receive a complete written quote after your imaging is reviewed, before you pay any deposit.
Do I need an MRI before treatment?
Yes, recent imaging is required so the specialist can confirm candidacy. An MRI is preferred for most joints. If you do not have one, your Patient Advisor will tell you exactly what to request from your doctor.
How long do I need to stay in Tijuana?
Most hip patients stay 2 to 3 days, including labs, evaluation, treatment and a check before departure. Your exact itinerary is confirmed in your plan.
When will I feel a difference?
Improvement is gradual. Some patients notice changes within a few weeks, while others take two to three months. We check in with you over the first six months to follow your progress.
Can more than one joint be treated in the same trip?
Often, yes. Many patients treat both knees, or a knee and a shoulder, in one visit. The specialist decides what is safe and appropriate for your case.
Is stem cell therapy for hips FDA approved?
No. Stem cell therapy for hip pain is not FDA-approved in the United States. In Mexico, it is performed by licensed physicians under Mexican health regulations.
Does insurance cover this treatment?
Most insurance plans do not cover regenerative treatments performed in Mexico. Your Patient Advisor can provide documentation you may submit to your provider.
Is it safe to travel to Tijuana for treatment?
Our patients are picked up in San Diego by a private driver, cross through the medical lane and stay within a secure medical complex. Your Patient Advisor coordinates every transfer and stays with you on site.
